The Outsiders

After 7th Grade students finish Godless and related assignments, they will begin The Outsiders. Every student should have his or her own copy (either purchased or checked out from the library) by September 12. This is a different date than what was on the syllabus.

The Outsiders was written by S.E. Hinton. There are several different volumes available, but the text is all the same, so it doesn't matter which style you purchase.

7th and 8th Graders should be working in Unit II of Vocabulary Workshop. The unit tasks are due Thursday and the quizzes are on Friday. Be sure to use the study strategies discussed in class to prepare for the quizzes!

7th Grade classes began Godless this week. The novel is a coming-of-age story involving "tragedy, drama, and adventure" according to the author Pete Hautman, and it will help us answer one of our MYP Unit questions-What motivates people to think and act the way they do?

8th Grade classes are reading The Pigman. The novel is a classic coming-of-age story by Paul Zindel and it usually a class favorite. Since the novel is set sometime in the sixties, students are given daily snippets of sixties politics and culture through videos and readings. We are synthesizing the novel through the Environment Area of Interaction, and we will attempt to determine how our various environments affect how we think and act.

This week both grades will begin work in Vocabulary Workshop published by Sadlier-Oxford. Vocabulary study is intended to be completed by the student as nightly homework, and it addresses the Approaches to Learning IB Area of Interaction. Although students are expected to complete the unit activities independently, various study techniques will be presented in class. Students are responsible for applying these techniques on their own.

The Sadlier-Oxford website offers review activities for each unit.

Like social networking or not, but this "random things" chain of a couple of years ago is perfect for the first days of school!

25. My favorite punctuation mark is the ellipsis, and I overuse it in my writing.
24. I take one Splenda in a regular-sized cup of coffee.
23. I met my husband at SMS.
22. I use my grill at least once per week.
21. I prefer needle point (.7) pens. Black for writing, colored for grading.
20. I'm still trying to figure out of I really needed the iPad2.
19. My TV is usually tuned to HGTV or The Travel Channel.
18. I love Seinfeld and King of Queens reruns on TBS when I have nothing else to do.
17. My current favorite movie is Wonder Boys.
16. I'm a good cook and I love to experiment with recipes; I rarely serve the same dish twice.
15. I can't focus without breakfast.
14. My left hip was out of socket when I was born. My surgeon had to attend a special medical conference to prepare for the surgery to put it into place, and the procedure was successful.

I'm freaking out a bit. Summer is almost OVER! Ahhhh!

Ok, ok, ok...it is only July 9, but I keep looking forward to my upcoming travels (Michigan on the 14th; Wyoming on the 18th) which seems like I'm burning days before I even get to live them, and I have not used the days I've already used very wisely. At the beginning of summer I usually make resolutions similar to those I make every January 1, and akin to every January 1, I usually fall short of my expected outcomes.

Analysis of Summer Goals:
1. Read. I have finished two books and I'm working on a third which is a thick one.
2. Work on my book. It's been neglected for the past two weeks.
3. Work on my house. Aside from routine cleaning, this one is a swing and a miss.
4. Save some money. LOL.
5. Exercise. This one has been achieved except for the 4th of July weekend...but holidays don't count, right?
6. Prepare for the upcoming school year. The process has commenced marked by the beginning of this blog.
